Physical disabilities can occur at any point in our lives and to anyone. Injuries, illnesses and disorders can all cause us to develop disabilities which have an impact on how we live our day to day lives. Whilst being disabled comes with its own challenges, these are merely that. Hurdles that can be overcome and risen above.
The important thing to remember about disability of any type, is that it is down to everyone to help disabled people to feel empowered and to be able to feel that they can live their life in a way that they want to.
We need to remember that disability comes in a variety of different types. Some are physical, whilst some are intellectual. You can also have disabilities that impact how well you can see or hear.
But how can we do this? Let’s take a look at physical disability first, how can we empower those with a physical disability?
Recognise we all have a part to play
One of the best places to start when it comes to empowering disabled people is to ensure that we all recognise that we have a part to play. The thing about change is that we all need to take the steps to ensure that what we want to happen, happens. You might think that you only have a small part to play, but we can promise you that you have much more power than you realise.
Make sure that disabled people are included
Having a physical disability can mean that you find things harder to do than other people may. However, what this should mean is that the world finds ways to ensure that those who are disabled are as included as possible. There are more and more developments being made into ways that those with a physical disability can make their lives easier, especially when it comes to the everyday tasks that they need to carry out. So, make it your aim to know what these are and put them in place.
Talk to people who are disabled and ask them what they want to change
Whilst we can try and empathise with those who have a disability and learn more about their lives, no-one can truly understand what life is like with a disability, unless you are living it. The best way to try and work out what things need to change and how best to approach this, is to speak to those who have a physical disability. By speaking to them, you can understand what challenges that they face, as well as work with them to understand more about what it is that they would like to change.
As you can see, there are so many ways that you can help to ensure that someone with a physical disability feels empowered and able to continue to live their day to day lives in the fullest way possible.
The main thing is to ensure that you not only yourself understand these issues, but that you also do whatever you can to raise awareness in others. By working together we can help to ensure that those with a disability feel that they are a part of the wider world.
